Loãng xương là tình trạng giảm mật độ xương, dẫn đến tăng nguy cơ gãy xương, đặc biệt là sau khi bị ngã hoặc chấn thương. Khoảng 3.2 triệu người Việt Nam bị loãng xương. Dữ liệu cho thấy trên toàn thế giới, khoảng 1/3 phụ nữ và 1/5 nam giới trên 50 tuổi sẽ bị gãy xương do căn bệnh này. Ở nước ta, có hơn 2,4 triệu phụ nữ bị bệnh loãng xương, hơn 190 nghìn người gãy xương do bệnh loãng xương gây ra ở cả hai giới, 29 nghìn người trong số đó là gãy xương hông. Số lượng nữ giới trên 50 tuổi bị gãy lún đốt sống chiếm chừng 23%. Gãy xương do loãng xương hay xảy ra ở hông, cổ tay và cột sống. Hậu quả của những lần gãy xương này, bệnh nhân dễ bị đau và giảm khả năng vận động. Để phòng tránh những biến chứng này, việc nhận biết và điều trị sớm là vô cùng quan trọng.
Bệnh loãng xương được biết đến là căn bệnh thầm lặng, do người bệnh không thể cảm nhận được xương của mình đang yếu dần đi. Nó thường được chẩn đoán quá muộn, sau khi đã bị gãy xương. Một số bệnh nhân nhận thấy rằng họ đang giảm chiều cao hoặc phát triển cong về phía trước của cổ và lưng trên, đó có thể là dấu hiệu sớm của bệnh loãng xương. Nếu bạn nhận thấy những dấu hiệu này, hãy hỏi ý kiến bác sĩ để đánh giá.
Nguyên nhân phổ biến nhất của loãng xương là do tuổi tác thay đổi cấu trúc xương. Phụ nữ có nguy cơ cao hơn do thiếu estrogen sau khi mãn kinh. Một số loại thuốc có thể làm tăng nguy cơ loãng xương bao gồm steroid đường uống, thuốc hóa trị và thuốc ức chế bơm proton (PPI).
Bệnh loãng xương có thể được chẩn đoán bằng xét nghiệm mật độ khoáng xương (BMD) trên máy đo loãng xương toàn thân InAlyzer AIR - MEDIKORS, đo lường mức độ dày đặc của xương ở một số vùng nhất định. Bệnh loãng xương có thể điều trị được bằng cả điều chỉnh lối sống và thuốc. Một số yếu tố quan trọng trong điều trị loãng xương bao gồm tập thể dục thường xuyên, bổ sung đầy đủ canxi, tránh hút thuốc và uống rượu. Nếu mật độ xương của bạn rất thấp hoặc bạn đã bị gãy xương trước đó, bác sĩ có thể kê đơn thuốc để giúp tăng hoặc duy trì mật độ xương của bạn. Mục tiêu của liệu pháp này là ngăn ngừa gãy xương trong tương lai và tối đa hóa mật độ xương.
